瓜食めば

【原文】

瓜（うり）食（は）めば 子供思ほゆ 栗（くり）食（は）めば まして思（しの）はゆ 何処（いづく）より
来（きた）りしものぞ 眼交（まなかひ）に もとな懸（かか）りて 安眠（やすい）し寝（な）さぬ

（反歌）
銀（しろかね）も 金（くがね）も玉も 何せむに 勝（まさ）れる宝子に 及（し）かめやも

【現代語訳】

瓜を食べると子が思い出され、くりを食べるとなおしのばれます。どこからきたものなのでしょう。
目の前にむやみにちらついて、眠らせないのは。

（反歌）
金も銀も珠玉もどうして子供より優れた宝といえましょう。

【英訳】

I eat a melon,
And then I think of children;
I eat a chestnut,
Then the more I love children;
I do wonder whence
They have come into this world,
Why before mine eyes
They appear and move about,
And let me not fall asleep.

Even bright silver,
Even gold and genuine gems,
Of what use are they?
No treasure is so valuable,
So rich as lovely children.
